Director of Custodial Operations

Position Summary

We are seeking a Director of Custodial Operations to oversee custodial services across a large K-12 school district. This role is responsible for leading a multi-site custodial workforce, managing budgets, and ensuring clean, safe, and welcoming environments for students and staff. The Director will work closely with school leaders, district executives, and custodial teams to deliver high standards of service and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead custodial operations for approximately 65 school facilities.

  • Directly manage 8–9 supervisors and oversee 300+ frontline custodial staff.

  • Oversee and manage a custodial operating budget of approximately $14M.

  • Ensure consistent service quality across all facilities through auditing, training, and best practices.

  • Develop, train, and motivate staff at all levels, fostering career growth and strong team performance.

  • Collaborate with principals, superintendents, and district executives to address needs and maintain client satisfaction.

  • Implement custodial operations programs including floor care, equipment use, and safety standards.

  • Monitor financial performance, prepare budgets and reports, and ensure fiscal responsibility.

  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships, ensuring compliance with agreements and service levels.

  • Handle project management assignments including capital planning, custodial improvements, and special event setups.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of successful facilities management leadership, with emphasis on custodial operations.

  • Experience managing custodial operations in a K-12 school district or higher-education setting.

  • Proven multi-unit leadership experience overseeing multiple facilities and large teams.

  • Demonstrated success in budget management, financial reporting, and operational controls.

  • Strong customer service, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to engage effectively with frontline staff and executive leadership.

  • Hands-on custodial knowledge, including floor care and custodial equipment.

  • Experience in project management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Certified Facilities Manager (CFM) or equivalent certification.

  • Experience managing custodial operations at scale in education, healthcare, or large public facilities.
