Overview
A leading manufacturer of automated packaging systems is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join their team onsite in Appleton, WI. This role focuses on the design, specification, and testing of advanced modified atmosphere packaging machines, including systems for flexible film tracking, heat sealing technologies, conveyors, product handling, and scaling. This is a hands-on position in a dual development and production environment, ideal for someone with deep expertise in mechanical design for capital equipment used in the food packaging industry.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead mechanical design and engineering for new products, customer orders, and special projects.
• Direct and collaborate with mechanical designers and drafters when needed.
• Perform complex engineering calculations (mass/energy balance, load, and strength).
• Develop and specify mechanical components, materials, instruments, and manuals for new product designs and orders.
• Ensure design accuracy and quality through regular inspections and technical direction on the manufacturing floor.
• Use Excel, including macros and advanced formulas, to manage projects and streamline processes.
• Maintain and manage designs using SolidWorks and other CAD platforms.
• Support and participate in cross-functional projects to drive innovation and efficiency.
Must-Have Requirements
✅ Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience in capital equipment design and service
✅ 5-10 years of hands-on mechanical design experience
✅ Proficient with CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar)
✅ Ability to develop reporting macros for exporting to secondary programs like CRM
✅ Extensive knowledge of manufacturing processes, part fabrication, and component selection in the meat products and food industries
✅ Proven experience in food packaging, washdown requirements, line integration, and scaling systems
✅ Specific experience in the flexible packaging or packaging industry is a plus
✅ Strong organizational, communication, analytical, and project management skills
✅ Proficient with MS Word, Excel (advanced macros/formulas), and PowerPoint
✅ Valid driver’s license and ability to travel up to 10%, including internationally
✅ Willingness and ability to work onsite in Appleton, WI
